Of course you can use weblogs (internet journals) to simply unload your thoughts, store ideas, meet new internet friends or whatever.
However as a website owner one of the main reasons I use blogs is to increase visits to my website(s) by both visitors and search engine spiders.
Blogs seem to do very well in getting crawled and indexed by search engines such as google, yahoo, msn etc so making blog entries related to topics and pages found in your "real website" and linking them together can drive more traffic from both blog readers and search engine spiders to any page within your site. This simply means that you can reach more people who are searching for those topics you blog about and get more promotion of the links you leave in your blogs that point to your site.. Another way to generate traffic and visitors while also increasing relevent content on your website is to use an RSS tool that allows a normal html or php based website to dynamically display newsfeeds from blogs and other sources on your site. You can basically build a site that is updated around the clock with fresh content using xml, rss, atom feeds etc
